Tri-State Liver Transplant Support Group

Purpose
To provide support and information to liver transplant patients, including transplant recipients and those waiting for a transplant, and their families and to promote organ donation.

History
The group was formed as a non-profit, volunteer-based support group for liver transplant patients in 1997 by The University Hospital liver transplant patients. The members include transplant recipients, those waiting for transplants, transplant patients' families, medical personnel members and those who are interested in promoting transplantation and organ donation.

Meeting Schedule
1st Monday of even months (Feb., April, etc.)

Change of Heart Support Group

Purpose
To provide support and encouragement to heart transplant recipients, candidates awaiting heart transplants and the immediate families of the recipients/candidates through transplant education, prayer, volunteer services, social activities and financial aid to needy recipients/candidates living in the Tri-State area.

History
Dr. David Melvin of University Hospital and a group of heart transplant recipients created Change of Heart, Inc. – a non-profit, volunteer-based support group - in 1990.

Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Support Group

To provide a supportive environment to discuss pre/post transplant issues.  Those in attendance support each other as they have had similar experiences.  Many of them had or have diabetes and share helpful hints/tips. 

They discuss the emotional aspects of:

  • waiting for transplant
  • dealing with the side effects of post transplant medications
  • rejection episodes/fear of graft loss
  • being immunosupressed
  • appreciation for the donor/donor family

History
The group was formed in April 2007 by kidney/pancreas transplant patients with the support of the Transplant social worker, Kathy Daley LISW-S.  The members include transplant recipients, those considering transplant, candidates awaiting transplant, living donors, and their families/friends. 

Meeting Information
